Food systems transformation- how we deal with food loss and waste — Nicole Junkermann

“Healthy people, healthy planet and healthy economy”

I recently attended the Women in Food & Agriculture Industry Digital Festival. I heard from Geeta Sethi, Advisor and Global Lead for Food Systems at the World Bank.

She gave a fascinating talk discussing our food systems and the urgent challenge we face of transforming them. Given she has previously worked on both the food loss and waste agenda as well as the transformation of food systems challenge, she was able to give some very fascinating perspectives on this…

I was fascinated to learn during the Harvard Business School AgriBusiness Seminar that, on September 29, 2020, the market value of U.K.-based grocery ecommerce firm Ocado Group (Ocado) reached $27.5 billion, more than double its value in January and — as noted by the British Press. This surge in share price was a true reflection of a sudden shift in expectations for the future of supermarkets and e-commerce in the UK and beyond.

Whereas previously, ecommerce platforms like Ocado had been seen as a risky investment, now many are hedging their bets that such platforms will continue to dominate the…

As part of my Harvard Business School Course, one seminar was focused on Riverstone, a joint venture based in China between Pipestone Holdings (experts in swine health and biosecurity in the US) and Proterra Investment Partners. In Shandong province, they built three world-class farms, with capacity for 20,000 sows and 520,000 weaned pigs each year.

Pipestone, a US based company, offer swine management services to farmers. Their work in China began in the early 2000s, when they were invited to speak to pork farmers, taking on consulting jobs and some farm management contracts with Chinese producers. Proterra, a private equity…

New research shows a clear link between hormonal dips and a rise in Alzheimer’s in women. FemTech can provide the solutions to this and other female-specific conditions, but needs more investment, says investor and entrepreneur, Nicole Junkermann.

‘Let’s talk about dementia’ was the theme of this year’s World Alzheimer’s month — but it’s something that’s rarely, if ever, talked about in the context of women’s health. …

I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the recent Livestock, Environment and People (LEAP) Conference, hosted by the University of Oxford. There were a number of highly interesting talks and discussions through the course of the conference. I was particularly fascinated by the talk hosted by Roberta Alessandrini on the macro-nutrient profiles of plant-based meat substitutes as compared to their animal meat equivalents.

As Ms Alessandrini explained, she found that plant alternatives tended to score better than meat when considering the information available on their respective food labels. Meat products were generally higher in both fat and saturated…

LEAP Conference and Harvard AgriBusiness Seminar — My Personal Reflections

Something which struck me from the recent Oxford University LEAP Conference was just how pertinent the climate crisis is and how, failure to take action now will lead to devastating consequences.

As Henry Dimbleby argued in the plenary session, production and consumption are not always connected, we could eat healthily and trash the environment, and vice versa. This means that simply switching to a plant-based diet isn’t enough. Greenwashing and environmentally friendly rhetoric is simply not enough. As the cliché goes, actions speak louder than words. Jenny MacDiarmid of the…

The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago, the next best time is now”

Earlier this week I attended the Women in Food & Agriculture Digital Festival, hosted online the as all such events have been in 2020. The first session which I engaged with was given by Barbara Bray entitled “How can the food and agriculture industry step up to feed the world?”
